Fixing VMWare Player annoying mouse grab/ungrab under Workstation, Server under Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala

If you are having the very annoying mouse grab/ungrab problem under VMware Player, here is the quick fix you all have been waiting for.

The situation is as follows: after you bypass the 640×480 resolution limit, the mouse starts flickering like crazy. The VMWare Player can’t grab it, no matter what, and the only way is by pressing down the mouse button, which turns the VM unusable.

CTRL+G doesn’t seem to work either, and a VNC solution is the only way. Quite annoying…

FIX

If you have the Workstation version:

1) Edit /etc/vmware/bootstrap

2) Add export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes"

If you have the Vmware Server 2.x

1) Search for a directory similar to this (some names may vary, according to your system configuration, but you get the idea)

~/.mozilla/firefox/jnlppo54.default/extensions/VMwareVMRC@vmware.com/plugins/lib

(yes, the ~ is your home directory, /home/YOURLOGINUSER)

2) Edit wrapper-gtk24.sh

3) Add after the 1st line,

export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="yes"

Restart

Enjoy

BTW, you can also try: export VMWARE_USE_SHIPPED_GTK="force" in case you have some application that won't allow you to use it

/.mozilla/firefox/jnlppo54.default/extensions/VMwareVMRC@vmware.com/plugins/lib
